Why Minis?

Mini-Alpines have intrigued me for the last couple of years that I have sporadically bred them.  The animals we bred were often delightful, but there just wasn't a burning desire to start a herd with them.  When a friend asked me if I had ever considered adding a breed other than Alpines to our herd, I told her "No!".  I never even considered another breed as I liked the Alpines so much.  But, that one question, coupled with our experimentation, soon got the pot perculating, so to speak.   Every year I have pondered starting a herd of minis by incorporating in our Alpines, but just wasn't ready to take the official plunge.  Then after mulling on that question and realizing how much we had delighted in the animals that we had bred, it seemed like a no brainer idea to make it official  So, after the years of pondering;

Welcome to the SEQUOIA WOOD MINI-ALPINE HERD BOOK!

I have talked to many people that are dismayed at the increasingly larger size trend they are seeing in the standard breeds.  We happen to like a larger animal, but realize there are other needs to think about.  People admire the smaller animals and seem to find them much less intimidating.  Being personally involved as a leader in 4-H, I hear increasingly more often from 4-Hers that the standard breeds are just too large, and many younger 4-H children just getting involved are turning away from standard sized breeds because the size is intimidating.  Another trend we have noticed is the increase of people that want home milkers but don't want to feed a full sized animal because they don't need that quantity of milk.  We think the minis are the perfect solution to meet the desires and concerns we have seen.

We have admired, through our experimentation, the stamina we have seen in the minis we have bred thus far.  Combining that with the increased butterfat, longer breeding season, and reduced feed costs we can anticipate,  this is an exciting adventure we are looking forward to embarking on!

Breeding Plans:

The Nigerian foundation bucks of our beginning mini herd for fall 2009 will be:

Midnight Oil OT Mini Cooper

and

Celtic Stars TA Memphis

  Memphis' Sire:  Kehilan Tigereye

 Memphis' Dam: Adams Funny Farm TR Abbey

Next year we hope to use an unrelated nigerian buck resulting in a crop of kids totally unrelated to the first crop from this year for crossing lines.  When looking for that second nigerian buck, we went to Poppy Patch Farm as we have admired the consistent job they have done with the correctness of front ends, teat placement and medial suspensory ligaments in their herd.  These were probably some of the largest challenges we viewed when thinking about starting our mini herd with the nigerian breed.

Both does being bred this year, Pageant and Felicity, are grandaughters out of my most consistent alpine doe,
The Sor N Son TT Free Bea. Both Felicity and Pageant are from the same sire, Tempo  Aquila Tecoro, a grandson of the 2008 ADGA National Grand Champion Doe, SGCH Tempo Aquila Tokay 5*M.  Both sides of Tecoro's pedigree are well known for their excellence in both milk production and components.

Foundation does that will be bred nigerian in the Fall of 2009:

   Felicity  : Dam of our new 1st generation mini-alpine buck!
